California, 14 December 2007 (Gulf News)
A US marine has been found guilty of killing an Iraqi soldier while they were patrolling Fallujah’s streets.
A military court in San Diego convicted Lance Corporal Delano Holmes of negligent homicide. He faces up to eight years in prison and dishonourable discharge.
Holmes told the court that he stabbed Iraqi private Munther Jasem Muhammed Hassin after suspecting that Hassin he might be signalling to an insurgent sniper during a fight.
He said he suspected that the Iraqi was signalling to insurgents with a lit cigarette and a mobile phone during a night patrol.
Prosecutors accused Holmes of repeatedly stabbing the Iraqi solder—whom they called a "peaceful guy"—with his bayonet. Hassin sustained 17 stab wounds.
Holmes was also found guilty of lying to his superiors about the incident.
